Is it private?

Yes. M4A to MP3 runs entirely in your web browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send them anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive files. Results are kept encrypted on your device for 60 minutes in Your files, then deleted automatically, or straight away with Delete all. How Nolo works.

Questions and answers

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser with its built-in media engine (WebCodecs). Your recordings never leave your device, and the page works offline once loaded.

Can it convert iPhone voice memos?

Yes. Voice memos are AAC audio in M4A files. Choose 128 kbps and Mono for small files that sound just as clear.

Does it work with protected iTunes songs?

No. Old DRM-protected purchases (.m4p) cannot be decoded by a browser.

Why does it say my browser cannot decode the audio?

M4A holds AAC sound, which your browser must decode. Some browser builds (for example some Linux ones) have no AAC decoder; use Chrome or Edge on Windows, macOS or Android, or Safari.

Will quality drop?

Slightly, as with any lossy-to-lossy conversion. At 192 kbps it is inaudible for almost everyone.
