Base64 encode and decode

Type text to encode it as Base64, or paste Base64 to decode it. Text uses UTF-8, so accents and emoji work. Files and images can be turned into Base64 or data: URLs and back into files.

How to use Base64 Encode/Decode

  1. Choose Text or File.
  2. For text, choose Encode or Decode and type or paste.
  3. For files, drop a file to get Base64, or paste Base64 to get a file back.
  4. Copy or download the result.

Is it private?

Yes. Base64 Encode/Decode runs entirely in your web browser. What you type is never sent to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send it anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive data. Nothing is stored either: close the page and it is gone. How Nolo works.

Questions and answers

Is my text or file sent to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser and your text or file never leaves your device. The page is not allowed to talk to any other site, so it is safe to use with real data and secrets.

Why do accents or emoji come out garbled on other sites?

The browser's built-in btoa() only handles Latin-1. This tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes first, which is what almost every system expects, so "GrรผรŸe ๐Ÿ‘‹" round-trips correctly.

What is URL-safe Base64?

Base64url (RFC 4648) replaces + with - and / with _ and usually drops the = padding, so the result can go in URLs and file names. JWTs use it. The decoder accepts both kinds automatically.

What happens if the decoded data is not text?

The tool detects binary data, shows its size and type (PNG, JPEG, PDF, ZIP and others are recognised), previews images and lets you download the file.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding that anyone can reverse. It makes binary data safe to put in text, but it does not hide it.

How much bigger does Base64 make data?

About 33% bigger: every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
