Is it private?

No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or saved.
How are words counted?
A word is any run of letters or numbers, including words joined by an apostrophe or hyphen ("don't", "well-known"). This matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count in almost every case.
How is reading time calculated?
At 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute.
Does it count characters with and without spaces?
