About Password Generator
The passphrase list has more than 2,500 common English words, so each word adds about 11 bits of entropy.
Is it private?
Yes. Password Generator runs entirely in your web browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send them anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive files. Results are kept encrypted on your device for 60 minutes in Your files, then deleted automatically, or straight away with Delete all. How Nolo works.
Questions and answers
Are the passwords sent or stored anywhere?
No. They are made in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues and are not saved or sent. Closing the tab forgets them.
How random are they?
Each character or word is chosen with the Web Crypto secure random generator, using rejection sampling so every choice is equally likely.
What does "bits of entropy" mean?
It measures how many guesses an attacker would need: each extra bit doubles it. 60 bits is reasonable, 80 is strong and 100+ is very strong. The figure assumes the attacker knows the settings you chose.
Password or passphrase?
A passphrase of 5 or 6 random words is as strong as a 12-character random password and much easier to type and remember. Use random passwords where a password manager fills them in.
What does "Avoid look-alike characters" do?
It leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as I, l, 1, O, 0 and o, which helps when a password has to be read or typed by hand.
