How Nolo works
Short answer: Nolo sends the tool to you instead of asking you to send your file to it. Every tool runs in your browser, on your device, using WebAssembly and your device's own processor, graphics chip and media hardware.
What happens when you use a tool
- Your browser downloads the page and the tool's code from nolotools.com, the same way it loads any website.
- You choose a file. The browser reads it into the page's memory. It is not sent anywhere.
- The tool processes the file on your device and gives you the result as a download.
- A copy of the result is kept in Your files, encrypted, for 60 minutes. Then it is deleted automatically.
Why the page cannot leak your files
Every Nolo page carries a strict security policy that tells your browser it may only talk to nolotools.com. Even if someone tried to add code that sends data elsewhere, the browser would block it. And nolotools.com itself only serves pages: it has no address that accepts uploads.
We do not use analytics scripts, advertising, cookies or third-party fonts. Like every website, our network provider sees which pages are requested (not your files) to deliver them and keep the site safe.
Working offline
Nolo saves its pages on your device after your first visit. Each tool saves its engine (for example the PDF or video engine) the first time you use it, and shows its size beforehand. After that you can switch off Wi-Fi or mobile data and keep working. The green Offline-ready dot at the top shows when this is set up.
Your files on this device
Results are encrypted with AES-256 using a key that your browser creates and cannot export. They are kept for 60 minutes so you can download them again, then deleted automatically. Delete all at the top of every page destroys the key and every stored file at once. Honest note: this protects against someone reading your disk later; it cannot protect against malware already running on your own device.
Questions
Does Nolo upload my files?
No. Every Nolo tool runs inside your web browser, on your device. Files are read from your disk into the page and processed there. The page is not allowed to send data to any other website, and Nolo's server has no address that accepts files.
How can I check that nothing is uploaded?
Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and use any tool. You will only see the page loading its own code. Or switch off your internet after the page has loaded: the tools keep working.
Does Nolo work offline?
Yes. After your first visit, Nolo saves its pages on your device. Each tool also saves its engine the first time you use it. From then on it works with no internet connection.
What happens to my results?
Results stay on your device. A copy is kept in Your files, encrypted with a key that never leaves your browser, for 60 minutes so you can download it again. Then it is deleted automatically. Delete all removes everything at once.
Why is Nolo free with no limits?
Because your device does the work, a file costs us nothing to process. We only serve the web pages, which is cheap, so there is nothing to ration and no reason for ads or paywalls.
Do I need an account?
No. Nolo works without any sign-up, email or payment.
