About Remove EXIF
Lossless removal works by reading the file's structure: a JPG is a list of segments (APP1 holds EXIF and XMP, APP13 holds IPTC, COM holds comments), a PNG is a list of chunks and a WebP is a RIFF container. Nolo keeps the segments that make up the picture and drops the rest.
GIF, TIFF, AVIF and RAW files are not supported here yet.
Is it private?
Yes. Remove EXIF runs entirely in your web browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send them anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive files. Results are kept encrypted on your device for 60 minutes in Your files, then deleted automatically, or straight away with Delete all. How Nolo works.
Questions and answers
Are my files uploaded?
No. The file is read by code running in your browser tab. It is never sent to Nolo or anyone else, and the tool keeps working with your internet switched off.
Does removing EXIF reduce the photo quality?
No, for JPG, PNG and WebP. The metadata blocks are cut out of the file and the image data is copied byte for byte, so there is no re-compression. HEIC photos are the exception: they are converted to a high-quality JPG.
What exactly is removed?
In JPG: EXIF (including GPS and the thumbnail), XMP, IPTC/Photoshop data, comments, extra embedded images and anything after the end of the image. In PNG: text chunks, EXIF and the last-modified time. In WebP: the EXIF and XMP chunks.
Why keep the rotation?
Phones often save photos sideways and use an EXIF tag to say how to turn them. With "Keep rotation" on, Nolo writes back only that one tag so your photos are not displayed sideways. It contains no personal information.
What is the colour profile?
An ICC profile tells apps how to show the colours. It holds no personal data, so keeping it is safe and keeps colours accurate. Turn it off to remove it too.
How can I check the result?
Open a cleaned file in the Metadata Viewer. It should show no camera, date or location data.
