About Convert Image
Conversion decodes your image in the browser (HEIC through a WebAssembly decoder) and re-encodes it with MozJPEG, libwebp, libavif or the browser's PNG encoder plus OxiPNG optimisation. Converting a lossy file such as JPG to PNG makes it bigger but not sharper: PNG only stores exactly what is there.
Is it private?
Yes. Convert Image runs entirely in your web browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send them anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive files. Results are kept encrypted on your device for 60 minutes in Your files, then deleted automatically, or straight away with Delete all. How Nolo works.
Questions and answers
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Your images are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the tool keeps working with the internet switched off.
Which format should I pick?
JPG for photos that must open everywhere, PNG for screenshots, logos and anything needing exact pixels or transparency, WebP for small files on the web, AVIF for the smallest files in modern browsers and apps.
What happens to transparent areas when converting to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default). PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency.
Can it convert animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted. Animation is not kept.
Does converting keep the photo's orientation?
Yes. The EXIF rotation is applied, so photos stay the right way up. Other metadata such as camera details and GPS location is not copied to the new file.
