About Image to Base64
A data URI looks like data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0โฆ and can be used anywhere a URL is expected: an <img> src, a CSS background or a JSON field. The encoder uses your browser's own FileReader, and the decoder checks the first bytes of the result to name the file with the right extension.
Is it private?
Yes. Image to Base64 runs entirely in your web browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the page cannot send them anywhere: its security policy only allows it to talk to nolotools.com, which has no place to receive files. Results are kept encrypted on your device for 60 minutes in Your files, then deleted automatically, or straight away with Delete all. How Nolo works.
Questions and answers
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Your images are never uploaded to Nolo or anyone else, and the tool keeps working with the internet switched off.
Why is the Base64 bigger than the image?
Base64 writes every 3 bytes as 4 text characters, so it is about 33% larger than the file.
When should I inline images as Base64?
For small icons and images (under about 10 KB) it saves a request. Larger images make HTML and CSS heavier and cannot be cached separately, so link to them instead.
Which formats can it decode?
PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, BMP, ICO and SVG. The format is detected from the data itself, so a missing data: prefix is fine.
Does it accept URL-safe Base64?
Yes. "-" and "_" are converted, and missing "=" padding and line breaks are fixed automatically.
